Only consensus with federating units can amend 18th Amendment: President Alvi

President Dr Arif Alvi
While ruling out the intention to revoke the 18th Constitutional Amendment, President Dr Arif Alvi said that it could be modified to bring improvements only after the consensus among the federating units, Radio Pakistan reported.

Replying to a question, Dr Arif Alvi said the 18th Amendment is a part of the constitution and if the constitution could be amended, then why not the 18th Amendment can be improved, he argued.

On the death anniversary of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari had said that the rulers should refrain from ending 18th Constitutional Amendment and threatened to topple the government as well.

While PPP co-chairperson and former president Asif Ali Zardari had also alleged that the government was lodging cases against him to abolish the 18th Amendment.

One of the major opposition parties, PPP, has been accusing the incumbent government for making attempts to end the 18th amendment and introduce the presidential system of governance in its place.
