TRIPOLI: Eastern Libyan commander Khalifa Haftar ordered his troops to move towards the capital Tripoli, in a video message published online on Thursday.
The city is controlled by a rival administration. The video was titled "Operation to liberate Tripoli".
The message marks a significant escalation in the conflict that has divided Libya since the downfall of dictator Muammar Qaddafi in 2011.
Earlier Thursday, Haftar's forces took full control of Gharyan, a town about 100 km south of Tripoli.
